My name is Shelley Garrett. I sustained a traumatic brain injury in 1997 after a car accident with an 18 wheeler. Initially ambulance found no pulse or pain to stimulation. I was about 6 weeks pregnant at time of accident. According to reports I was in ICU for about a week in colma. Once out of colma the hospital had me on 1:1 supervision due to agitation after coming to alertness. Then transferred to. Inpatient Rehab Hospital for about a month. While there on February 14th (Valentine’s Day) I had a spontaneous abortion where I went to another facility to have DNC performed. I had to learn how to due many day to day activities that I used to take for granted. Walking while holding 30 lbs, weight of my son at the time, cooking, and many other activities to use my brain. I can honestly say I don’t remember much but know that I wanted more than anything to be a able to return to Nursing School at St. Louis University. After a month in inpatient rehab I attended outpatient rehab. This went on for unsure amount of time because I was also having to deal with my son’s father who took off with my son and wouldn’t let me have contact. It took me moving to Kentucky to live with father and step mom(who was a nurse) to prove to court I could be around son.
After moving to Kentucky and getting a job as Unit Secretary at a hospital, I knew I wanted to continue my goal of becoming a nurse. I applied for and attended Northern Kentucky University prerequisites for there Nursing program. Many nerological testing has been done and I was told that I would not be able to make it as a nurse. (Really good encouraging doctors huh.) I made it into 1st semester of actual nursing program where I began having trouble adjusting to the demands and necessities of nursing and unfortunately had to withdrawal from program. My stepmom was attending Cincinnati University to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at that time.
My brain continued to grow the more I used it. So when they decided to move to Kansas for step mom to get a new Nurse Practitioner Job I moved with them. Worked with her in the NICU as secretary until I tried to give nursing school another shot in Winter of 2001-2002. Due to having many prerequisite classes taken between 2 Universities in the past 6 years, I was able to enter directly into Neosho County Community College nursing program. This was a much smaller school with smaller class, which allowed me to get extra help that I may need. With all my free time studying and finding a wonderful “study buddy” I graduated in Decembet 2003.
It however took me 4 times to pass the Nursing Boards but I did. I for sure wasn’t going to let that stop me.
I worked at a hospital on Med Surg Unit and Pediatrics floor for a couple of years. Did have some deficits at times like remembering to write an order given by doctor prior to performing nursing task. Did some home healthcare. Then went to work for Osawatomie State Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital. Worked there without much problems for about 5 years, except I worked night shift which was taken quite the toll on my body.
I quit this job due to inability to physically handle and effect I was having on my kids at the time. Dayshift was tried to obtain multiple times without success. So went back to providing home health care for pediatric clients.
I did have residual effects from the brain injury such as gait problems at times. Slurred speech. Remembering certain activities and horrible with directions. I was adapting to these side effects This was my last nursing job before I collapsed one day on beginning of February in 2015 at Wal-Mart having a Grand Mal Seizure.
Now I did have a seizure according to reports after Traumatic Brain Injury, and was told I may have again, however never did again until then that I recalled.
After that day at Wal-Mart I did work a couple of shifts for a particular family but I would have multiple seizures a day. I had decided to let my nursing license expire so I would not put any one at risk if would have seizure in there presence. This came along with severe anxiety and depression. Became unable to work. Lost home and much more. Lost my dignity as a person.
My parents moved me up to Olathe area from Paola in order to be close to family for rides, financial help and support etc. After many EEG tests and psychological test is was determined that not all of my seizures were epileptic. Many of the other seizures were stressed induced, Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures.
A year later I got awarded disability with the following diagnosis: Traumatic Brain Injury, Severe Anxiety and Depression, and PTSD. I currently see a Psychiatrist and Primary Care doctor for my needs. I stopped seeing the Neurologist I wad seeing because he was one of those physicians who sees these kind of seizures as “fake.”
I have gotten alot better in the last 6-9 months. I have only had 1 seizure about 2 months ago. However continue to experience severe depression and anxiety. I am on high dose of Prozac and take Depakote 1000mg a day for seizure.
Extra info about me. I had Thyroid cancer about 2006 and had to get total Thyroidectomy. Requiring me to take Thyroid medicine rest of life in order to perform every day daily activities. Also as a young child I was sexually molested and raped by a family member. This has resurfaced in my mind and now adds to my problem. The reason I bring up these other things is because I believe that my Traumatic Brain Injury has been why these things have had such a dramatic effect on my life. I would like to address many of these plus other topics I find relevant not only to my Brain Injury but also recovery.
As of this coming up February 2018, it has been 21 years since time of accident. I have been on Disability for a year now, still unable to drive, also effects depression and anxiety.
This website is a way to get my word out. Help improve myself as a person. Help other people become familiar with and learn from my experiences, and if possible make money in process.
Looking for as much help as you can to reach my goals.
